How a Chance Meeting in Salvador Brought Two New Members to Batala London

Member Story: As told by Andy

One of the things we often say to our members is that if you get the chance to visit Salvador, Bahia, take it. There's nowhere better to experience the roots of the music and culture that inspires everything we do.

Of course, wherever Batala members go, they also end up talking about the band. Sharing our music, our community and our passion comes naturally, and sometimes those conversations lead to something unexpected.

Long-time members Valeria and Andy were back in Salvador for their second visit in February 2026, staying at the welcoming Pousada da Mangueira. The Pousada's manager, Claudio, is known for bringing guests together, creating a friendly atmosphere where strangers quickly become friends.

As they walked through reception one day, Claudio introduced them to two new arrivals from London, Maureen and her daughter, Christina.

Our rehearsals are in West London, and we're always looking for new members. You should come along when you're back home. Andy, Batala London

When Maureen revealed she also lived in West London, Valeria handed over a Batala London business card with a smile.

A few weeks later, back in the chilly London weather, Maureen and Christina came along to a newbie session. The rest, as they say, is history.

They've been to every rehearsal since, thrown themselves into learning the rhythms, and have already become valued members of the Batala London family.

This chance meeting in Salvador led to Batala London new members, reminding us that rhythm and connection travel far beyond the stage.

It's a brilliant reminder that Batala isn't just about playing music. It's about making connections, wherever you are in the world. Sometimes all it takes is a conversation in a hotel reception in Salvador to welcome two more people into the band.

Batala isn't just about playing music, it's about making connections, wherever you are in the world.
