Who can join Batala London?

Batala London is open to everyone. We welcome both beginners and experienced drummers who want to learn, play and share rhythm as part of a collective group.

Can I join Batala London if I don’t live in London?

Yes. Many of our members travel from outside London to attend rehearsals and performances. What matters most is commitment, energy, and a willingness to be part of the group.

Do I need previous drumming experience to join?

No experience is needed. We learn samba-reggae rhythms together as a group, building confidence, technique and connection over time.

Where and when does Batala London practice?

We rehearse regularly in London. Full details of times and locations are shared when you register your interest, as they may vary depending on the season and performance schedule.

Do I need to own a drum or buy equipment to join?

No, drums are provided for rehearsals and performances. As you become more involved, we’ll guide you through how equipment works within the band.

How rehearsals work

Our rehearsals are relaxed, friendly and full of energy. You don’t need any experience — just enthusiasm, comfortable clothing and footwear, and a willingness to give it a go. We provide drums and sticks for newcomers, and you’ll be supported by members and Musical Directors as you settle in and learn the basics.

What you'll learn

You’ll learn the foundations of samba‑reggae drumming — simple rhythms, clear calls and how your section fits within the band. As you grow in confidence, you’ll pick up new patterns, develop timing and start to feel the shared energy that makes Batala London special. Everyone learns at their own pace, and there’s always support from members and Musical Directors along the way.
