There’s something special about the moment someone picks up a drum for the first time. The mix of curiosity and excitement creates an instant connection to rhythm. At Batala London, drumming sessions have been bringing new drummers from across London together, and we’ve been lucky enough to witness that magic twice already this March.
Across two lively taster sessions, we opened our doors to a wave of new faces who came along to try drumming with us. Some arrived with musical experience, others with none at all, and no experience is ever needed to get started. That’s exactly what Batala is about. No matter your background, the rhythm has a way of bringing everyone together.
From the first beats to the final run through, the room quickly filled with energy, laughter and rhythm. It wasn’t just about learning rhythms, it was about sharing them and discovering how accessible drumming can be, even for complete beginners. As always, our seasoned players were on hand to guide, encourage and welcome each newcomer into the fold, creating an atmosphere that felt instantly inclusive.
That spirit sits at the heart of Batala, a global movement rooted in Afro Brazilian samba reggae, built on connection, inclusivity and the joy of making music together.
And the good news is we’re not stopping here.
If you missed our March sessions, there’s still plenty of opportunity to get involved. Throughout April, we’ll continue welcoming newbies to come along, have a go and experience the buzz for themselves. No experience needed, just bring your enthusiasm and we’ll provide the rest.
So if you’ve ever felt the pull of the drums at a parade or festival, consider this your sign. Come and try it out this April. You might just find your new rhythm.
