More Than Music: Batala London at Samba de Bamba

There's the music you hear at a performance. And then there are the people and connections that make it happen.

On Sunday 11 October, Batala London joined Samba de Bamba UK at Maxilla Social Club in West London for their 65th roda de samba, part of a Pink October gathering supporting breast cancer awareness and the charity Against Breast Cancer.

It was a chance to play, reconnect with familiar faces and be part of something that reaches beyond the music.

Friendships that bring us together

Our connection with Samba de Bamba didn't begin with this event.

Through friendships built within London's Brazilian community, Batala London has had the pleasure of performing at Samba de Bamba gatherings several times over the years.

And that support goes both ways. Members of their community have also been there for Batala London at our own performances.

It's something we value about being part of London's Brazilian music scene. Different groups, different rhythms, but friendships and a shared enthusiasm for bringing people together through music.

Music with a shared purpose

This particular Sunday had another reason for bringing people together.

Samba de Bamba's October gathering was part of Outubro Rosa — Pink October — an opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer and support Against Breast Cancer.

Alongside the music, the organisers were collecting bras for donation, giving the community a practical way to contribute.

For Batala London, being invited to perform meant being able to support that wider effort through something we love doing: playing samba-reggae.

Guests and musicians gathered around a table at Samba de Bamba UK's Pink October charity event at Maxilla Social Club, with pink decorations and the Samba de Bamba banner in the background.

More than one Sunday afternoon

A performance might last only a short time, but the connections behind it have often been years in the making.

For us, returning to Samba de Bamba is about more than another opportunity to get our drums out.

It's about friendships, mutual support and being part of a wider community that continues to welcome us.

Thank you to Samba de Bamba UK for inviting us to share the stage once again, and to everyone who came together to support the event.

Until the next time.

Music brings us together. Community keeps us connected.
